Innovate Carolina Strategic Plan
Background
Provide human-centered design and innovation (DT&I) expertise to 1) engage in planning process that leverages cross University networks, partnerships and resources to support meaningful advancement of Carolina’s Innovation strategy, and 2) identify and elevate big bet and big win ideas to advance UNC’s strategic innovation thrusts

Initial planning meeting(s)
Work with the Vice Chancellor to coordinate outreach to the Innovate Carolina Design Team and key leaders on the UNC Innovation Council
Engage the Innovation Council design team to set expectations for strategic plan workflow and human centered design process
Facilitate hopes and fears activity with key campus innovation leaders including those appointed to the Innovation Council

Establish five overarching aims to guide the strategic thrusts of the plan
Prioritize existing and revised outcome measures for mapping onto the overarching aims
Aggregate and sort change ideas to align with overarching aims and outcome measures
Collaborate with Master’s student intern on the design and tracking of key benchmarks on a user-friendly metrics dashboard
Draft UNC Innovation Strategic Plan to guide focus groups and establishment of partnerships to advance strategic thrusts

Conduct focus groups with identified campus innovation leaders for feedback on Innovation Council-generated strategic thrusts and change ideas to:
Elevate aligned innovation strategy activities and metrics
Generate opportunities for partnerships that will advance thrusts across the innovation ecosystem
Empower Innovate Carolina teams to implement and measure change ideas relevant to their day-to-day work
Develop promising change ideas that align with the Strategic Plan thrusts into actionable outcome measures
Revise UNC Innovation Strategic plan to reflect:
updated change ideas aligned with initial set of outcome measures
emerging interdisciplinary partnerships that will advance strategic thrusts
Impacts and Outcomes
Ongoing multidisciplinary partnerships that collaborate on change actions to support each strategic aim
Quarterly reporting with defined metrics prioritized to track impact
Engaged University leadership with shared accountability for strategic success
